The Farallon Institute has many projects in the theme of forage species (common prey) and ecosystem-based fisheries management.  Krill researchers study abundance and distribution in the California Current. Our forage fish projects (i.e., anchovy, herring) include research on abundance and demographics, how they are used by predators (from seabirds to sharks, sea lions to salmon), and how the role of forage species in marine food webs may be impacted by fisheries. Predators of these species also include commercially-valuable fishes, and we are working to incorporate ecosystem considerations into state-managed fisheries (e.g., California halibut).
